Authors in Pop Culture

For our Authors in Pop Culture assignment we are supposed to use an example where an author is portrayed in the narrative to argue a point from one of our readings so far this semester. I have decided on using the movie 8 Mile (one choice on Scot's list) because I am very interested in the Hip-Hop culture. Although I have seen this movie many times, it should be very interesting to watch the movie with a critical eye. It'll probably be a little weird thinking of Eminem as an "author", because I have never really looked at him as that. But after defining the term "author" in class, I now see how broad it can be. I am very excited to re-watch 8 Mile with the knowledge and questions I've aquired from the readings discussed in class. Analyzing something I am actually interested in should make this assignment pretty easy, if not fun.

I agree-it is hard to watch a movie thinking about the problems of authorship. I am writing about The Secret Window, and while it may seem like an easy movie to write about, I had alot of trouble watching it and not making little stereotypes become more important than the thought processes. I think it will be challenging to tie in the readings as well!

Watching "8 Mile" with the intent to write about authorship should be pretty entertaining. If nothing else, I would think it will be fun to take note of the relationship between Eminem and his fellow rap-authors. You should try comparing how he was influenced by his contemporaries to, say, how Barthes and Foucault influenced one another! How about that? Eminem, Barthes, same difference!

Hey. I guess I won't be the only one writing on 8 mile as well. I've seen it couple of times but never really thought about Eminem as an author, although he does write some of his songs.

i TOTALLY agree with watching 8-mile using a critical eye and being interesting. I guess I'll go even further and say I never thought of any rapper/poet/singer/songwriter as an author. I guess they were just the titles that were listed above; but after pondering the meaning of the author (as we've had ample time to do in class), it was rather silly of me not to think about author in these senses. I guess it's amazing at how changing the lens at which you look at life with can change your whole perspective! :)
